2008 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Onstar has been added as standard equipment. And an anti-trailer sway function has been incorporated into the stabilitrak electronic stability control system for more secure towing. These changes come on the heels of cabin improvements that began with the 2007 models, along with improved safety features. The equinox has been improving since its introduction as a 2005 model.  the lineup has been expanded for 2008 with the addition of two new models: the luxury-oriented equinox ltz and the performance-oriented equinox sport.  a 3. 4-liter v6 is the standard engine, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, which get an epa-rated 17/24 miles per gallon city/highway. Equinox sport gets a 3. 6-liter v6 and six-speed automatic transmission and gets an epa-rated 16/24 mpg.  all equinox models are available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. On the other hand, all-wheel drive makes the equinox perform better on snow and ice.  the equinox ltz features leather-trimmed seats with seat heaters. A navigation system is optional.  the sport model is a different kind of equinox, with a more aggressive look and sporting cabin. The sport also gets hydraulic (as opposed to electric) power steering, a tighter suspension, 18x8-inch polished, forged alloy wheels with 50-series tires, aerodynamic spoilers and rocker moldings, dual chrome exhaust tips, gauge package, and sport seats.  the equinox is chevy truck's answer to the ford escape, honda cr-v, and toyota rav4 compact suvs. However, equinox is bigger and roomier than any of these competitors. Equinox is big enough that its dimensions blur the line between compact and midsize sport utilities. It's nearly 14 inches longer than ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. Its long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. However, equinox seats only five, because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row, as does the toyota rav4. Like escape, cr-v, and rav4, the equinox is based on a passenger-car design but has an interior like a traditional suv. Therefore, industry observers and other car crazies call the equinox a crossover utility because it crosses over the line from truck to car.  this is a versatile vehicle when it comes to moving people and cargo. Options include the tow package, audio upgrades, side curtain airbags, and sunroof.  safety features include antilock brakes, stabilitrak electronic stability control, tire pressure monitor; dual-stage driver and front-passenger airbags. Side-impact and head-curtain airbags are optional 395) and come with a rollover sensor, so they can provide head and torso protection in a rollover as well as a side impact; they come standard on the ltz model. walkaroundthe chevy equinox is aerodynamically smooth, thanks to a subtle shaping of front and rear fascias as well as the rear spoiler. From the front, equinox still looks the part of a chevy truck, with its requisite single-bar grille sporting a large gold chevrolet bow-tie emblem.  sport models have a more menacing look akin to ss versions of the trailblazer and 2006 silverado.  in the broadside view, equinox looks different from the rest of the chevy truck family. The roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. The quality of some of the materials and control interfaces in the 2006 equinox was disappointing. The 2008 equinox sport gets new gauges.  rear-passenger legroom is excellent. The rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. With the rear seat completely forward, there's 35. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat.  because the rear seatback is split 60/40, equinox can transport two rear passengers along with long cargo items. When folded, the hard front seatback can be used as a table or desktop.  rear passengers enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and a fold-down center armrest with two additional cupholders.  cubby storage: up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. The floor-mounted cupholder works well, while slots farther to the rear holds cds angled forward for easy selection.  the sport interior is trimmed in dark ebony, with the requisite leather-wrapped steering wheel and more heavily bolstered front seats. All the practical flexibility of the regular equinox remains, however. driving impressionthe 3. 4-liter v6 used by the chevy equinox delivers good acceleration under most circumstances, and it's smooth enough. It feels strained when pushed at high rpm, however. The equinox is a big box for 210 pound-feet of torque.  the 3. 4-liter v6 is an old, iron-block, pushrod.

All-new for 2008. introductionthe chevrolet malibu nameplate has been around for a long, long time, in all kinds of shapes and sizes. This edition of the malibu shares its underpinnings with the other gm cars mounted on the epsilon front-drive platform, including the new saab 9-3, the new saturn aura, the pontiac g6, the european-market cadillac bls, and the german opel vectra. That's a fine group of cars to be associated with and the malibu is expected to be the biggest seller among them.  chevrolet says it has modified the platform with some extra strength and extra steel in the central tunnel area and the bodysides to help quiet the car and improve its crash performance. More quiet was added with composite inner fenders, thicker glass, and sprayed-on sound insulation throughout the body cavities. Still more quiet was engineered into the induction system, to make the engine sound powerful but quiet at full-throttle and during downshifts. It strikes a nice balance between well-controlled handling and a smooth ride. Overall, the new malibu feels smooth and refined and pleasant to drive.  the cabin is nicely designed, attractive, and everything is easy to operate, and the seats are comfortable.  in short, we think the chevy malibu stands up well when held against the toyota camry and honda accord gold standards. Choosing among them largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preference. Camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. In any case, we don't see the gap between this chevrolet and the imports that we used to see. lineupthe 2008 chevrolet malibu range includes the ls 19,995), 1lt 20,995) 2lt 22,635), and ltz 26,995), plus the hybrid 22,790). The base model also comes with electric power steering, to saved drag on the engine, while the v6-powered models come with hydraulic power steering.  lt models come with the 3. 6-liter v6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission along with stabilitrak yaw control, 17-inch wheels and tires, dual exhausts and manual shift control.  ltz adds 18-inch alloy wheels and tires, fog lights and clean-lens led taillamps, and comes with a long list of standard equipment items, plus and a higher-capacity six-speed automatic. Stabilitrak electronic stability control comes standard on lt, ltz, and hybrid models and includes brake assist. walkaroundchevrolet has followed an industry-wide trend with the malibu, stretching the wheelbase a full six inches compared to the previous model, to get more interior room for the occupants and a smoother, quieter ride, with an overall length that's only three inches longer, which means the all-new body has the preferred wheels-at-the-corners look.  the malibu looks masculine, brawny, yet clean and crisp. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue. We think it works better on the silverado, but it gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is the goal of the midsize sedan designer. The mid-level lt trim levels are expected to be the most popular, say gm executives, though the entry level ls-2 is also expected to be popular. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night.  less noticeable are thoughtful features such as the ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for wallets and such, a useful feature subaru has used for years.  cloth, suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are single color, but several new two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive.  we found the leather seats in the ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, very comfortable and supportive.  the stretch in wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk.  the new cabin includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets, standard ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets. We've never cared for the look of rolled-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs.  overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think it compares well to the cabin of the all-new 2008 honda accord. The quality of the hard plastic on the lower dash in the chevrolet isn't as nice as the material in the honda, and the material on the steering wheel hub is a little nicer on the honda, but it's still nothing to behold. The chevrolet has an attractive leather shift boot on cars with leather interiors is not found in the accord.  every malibu comes with xm satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system, but we're a little skeptical of this.  big knobs and buttons and an elegant design make operating audio and climate functions easy. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (non-navi) honda accord; the honda seems less intuitive and convenient. Unlike the honda, the chevrolet has the audio controls at the top, better because people tend to fiddle with their stereos more than their temperature controls.  climate controls in the malibu are very easy to operate utilizing big knobs for fan and vent modes and simple, clearly labeled buttons. Honda splits the climate controls up, forcing the driver to examine them more closely before pressing a button. Window switches are conveniently mounted on the doors. While classified as a midsize sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the toyota avalon, competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the ford taurus, chrysler 300, dodge charger, as well as the honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  we find the impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh, and it is, having been sharpened when the impala was last redesigned for 2006. Other people think so: the impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the u. S.  this is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The impala has a big trunk with a big trunk lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items.  on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, a 3. 9-liter v6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the impala handles well, and surprisingly so.  several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level impala lt probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the lt with the optional 3. 9-liter v6, which features gm's active fuel management to improve real-world fuel economy. The ltz adds a heavy-duty suspension, leather interior and convenience features. The ss comes with a small-block 5. 3-liter v8 engine that sounds great and delivers strong acceleration performance.  chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the impala. We highly recommend the stabilitrak electronic stability control. The audio system has been upgraded for 2008, and xm satellite radio is standard on all models. Onstar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers.  overall, the chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. The clever flip-and-fold rear seats are available 295); so is an engine block heater 75). A flex-fuel version of the v6 can burn e85 ethanol; it's standard in most states, optional in others.  lt 21,865) upgrades to dual-zone air conditioning, eight-way power adjustable driver's seat, dual exhausts, fog lights, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a compass, and more interior conveniences. The standard engine is still the 3. 5-liter v6. Options include the complete ls list plus leather upholstery 1125) on bench or bucket seats, a premium audio system 295), eight-speaker bose system 495), sunroof 900), universal garage door opener 100), and rear spoiler 275).  the lt luxury edition package 2,070) includes leather trim, an upgraded onstar with directions and connections and turn-by-turn navigation, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, flip-and-fold rear seat, abs/ebd with traction control, and a rear spoiler. The 2lt package 2675) includes the 3. 9-liter v6 with active fuel management (formerly called displacement on demand) and 233 horsepower; as well as the premium audio system, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, flip-and-fold rear seat, abs/ebd with traction control, rear spoiler, and 17-inch vented steel wheels with chrome wheel covers.  ltz 26,830) comes standard with the 3. 9-liter v6 and, for 2008, the same fe3 performance suspension as the ss model (see below). Abs/ebd and traction control are also standard. Standard wheels are now 18-inch five-spoke machined alloys wearing w-rated p235/50r18 performance tires.  the ss 28,235) boasts a 303-hp all-aluminum 5. 3-liter v8 designed specifically for front-wheel-drive applications. The ss comes with 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels, p235/50 w-rated performance tires, fe3 performance suspension, and leather-appointed bucket seats, although cloth-upholstered buckets are available for a credit 1125).  safety features that come standard on all impalas include dual front smart air bags and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags for front- and rear-seat passengers. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and traction control are standard on 2lt, ltz and ss, optional on ls and lt. Stabilitrak is offered for the first time on an impala and is standard on 2lt, ltz, and ss. A tire-pressure monitor is standard. walkaroundthe 2008 chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car.  most recently re-styled for 2006, the current impala features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.  the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a unique grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe 2008 impala has a lot going for it inside as well. Like the exterior, the cabin was completely redesigned for 2006, and has remained comfortably the same since then.  the standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive. Lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners.  a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on lt and ltz. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average.  the dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base ls model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  for 2008, a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with generation 7. 0 onstar. The base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage t.
